It seems only fitting for my first entry to include a video of the new J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie. Spring is going to have a whole new meaning this year. Is it a film we should be excited about?
The opinions differ. Some are adamant that it is sacrilegious to place new characters in the original Star Trek cast. Others are excited to see new blood taking a stab at recreating an idea that has been stagnant since the cancellation of the last Star Trek series, Enterprise. Some would argue it became stagnant after Star Trek The Next Generation finished their 9th movie, Insurrection (which is one of my personal favourites). Others are holding out on any opinion; they want to see the film first.
Personally, I am excited to see the film. Sure, I am skeptical. I mean any die-hard fan of Star Trek (especially of the original cast) has to hold some skepticism about whether or not a new cast, under the direction of J.J. Abrams, can produce a "Scotty" miracle and put Star Trek back into warp drive.
But if J.J. Abrams' past and current work is any indication of what this new movie will offer, I do hold some optimism. Fringe, for me, is one of the better shows on television right now. It has brought back some quirky sci-fi mixed with mystery and horror in a way that has not been witnessed on television since the X-Files and Millennium. Cloverfield was not a big hit for me, but it was any interesting attempt to do something different with a genre that has become too formulaic. In the famous words of Captain Kirk, "it was...fun."
Heck, just the fact that I can go to a movie theatre and experience a Star Trek film on the big screen again will be a thrill, whether it flops or soars. And that has to be worth something, right? Well, yes, certainly a monetary amount of just over $10.00.
